Saturday was International Lolita Day. My coordinate is belated, as this weekend was spent taking my finals and fixing my computer.
The story of my dead computer is rather hilarious. I rearranged some of my furniture and unplugged my pc to move it. When I plugged it all back in, it was dead as a doornail. My power supply unit had been hanging on by a thread for the past year as it was, so I thought it just needed replacing. I overnighted a new one off amazon, the same make and model, plugged it all in, still dead. Realized maybe when the psu died, it took my motherboard with it. So I overnighted a new motherboard and cpu from amazon, plugged those in, still dead. At this point, I’m thinking, the replacement psu I ordered must have been dead on arrival and didn’t want to wait for another shipment from amazon, and instead went to Best Buy and bought a more expensive psu. Plugged it all in, and finally, it lived, but windows kept erroring out.
Realized my copy of Windows was OEM and tied to my old dead motherboard. I thought, maybe I just needed to reinstall Windows with a new key. Ordered Windows through my school (for free, yay student discounts!), realized that I don’t have access to my disc drive to burn installation discs. All I have is my mac, and that can only mac installation discs for boot camp. Had to partition my macbook pro’s harddrive to install boot camp windows, so I could download the windows boot flash drive tool for pc. Ordered a second Windows key, made the boot flash drive, tried reinstalling windows, but the harddrive wouldn’t take it.
Realized my harddrive was also probably needing replacement. Grabbed an old external harddrive from my closet, pried it, stuck it in my tower and plugged it into my motherboard, set it to master in bios, and successfully installed windows. Now everything works, my old harddrive still has all of it’s data accessible as a slave drive, and I’ve been reinstalling all my software this week. What a nightmare. On the plus side I have a brand new motherboard and cpu, so everything is five million times faster, downside is I had to install Window’s 8.1, and I hate it. I wish I could downgrade back to Windows 7 :(.
