Instagram Round-up 6: Worlds End Shirtwaister Dress in Purple Gingham, Ready For Spring

In celebration of Spring, I picked up this Shirtwaister dress from Worlds End in a purple gingham. I hope to pick up a few more shirtwaisters before they run out of stock, as I currently only have it in black, tartan, and now purple/white gingham. It really is one of my all time favorite dresses, even though I despise button fronts for the risk factor of them popping off, the dress just wouldn’t look right without them. Here I have it paired with a belt I got from a dollar store near UCLA, my Worlds End giant orb pendant, a pair of Accessories Label Saawood clogs, and a Japan Label handkerchief worn as a head wrap. This dress would look wonderful with white shoes, but I won’t be getting another pair of white shoes for several months. I sold my white ballerinas, as they were too large, and now I’m debating if I should get them again in ballerina, boot, or solid white golfs. I’ll probably end up going with ballerina in the end, I find that style the most comfortable out of all the rocking horse shoes.

While out running errands the other day, I wore my Gold Label Milkyway T-shirt, Red Label Brocade Denim Pockets Mini Skirt, and my Gold Label Silver Maryjanes. My hair has had a growth spurt recently, and I’ve been doing a lot of conditioning treatments before bleaching my roots last night. I’ve gotten a little bit better at bleaching my own roots, and I’ve been using a new bleaching powder from Schwarzkopf that is much better than the old powder I was using from Clairol. The Clairol bleaching powder was really drying, always lifted unevenly, and I had to use it with a 30 volume developer. The Schwarzkopf powder lifts super evenly, has keratin to restore the hair’s strength during the bleaching, and is so effective that I can get away with using either a 10 or a 20 volume developer, last night I mixed both for a 15 volume, and my roots lifted just fine and still feel healthy. I’m quite pleased. I’ll take pictures later after I do my ritual olive oil/egg/coconut oil/honey treatment.

I’ve posted this dress for sale on ebay, it’s a lovely dress, but I’m both not fond of the stretch sleeves or the green hued dark khaki color. I was hoping when I bought it that it would be more grey than khaki. Anyways, my loss, someone else’s gain. I’m still trying to break in my red gillies. The biggest issue I seem to have with them is the round laces aren’t very comfortable against the skin, I might have to replace them with soft flat ribbons like my vintage black gillies. You can see below how the thick round laces dig into the skin.

In positive news, I’ve been feeling somewhat improved lately. I’ve been on the strict gluten free diet for 1.5 years now, and while I do still have super bad health days, I’ve also have many more good health days. I’ve been spending more time going to the pool to lay in the sun, sit in the jacuzzi, walk with the dogs, and do chores around the apartment that I’ve put off for the past 3 years. One of those things I’ve been putting off is ordering a new passport. While I can return to Tokyo anytime I wish, I don’t plan on going anytime soon, but I noticed my passport was expiring very soon, and I wanted to make sure that it was fully renewed just in case I get the traveling bug. I had to take new passport photos, and instead of having some careless shop staff take a picture with a cheapo point and shoot digital camera, I decided to take my own photos at home.

A couple weeks ago I ordered a tea cup set from ebay for really cheap, and was so upset that it arrived chipped. It’s just a small chip, but it’s right on the side of the print! I thought I would have to put up a major ebay battle to get my money back, but the seller was really accommodating and sent me a replacement that arrived perfectly safe and sound. Now I have two tea cup sets, one broken and one perfect. I tried to see if I could fix the chip with porcelain patch epoxy, but it didn’t work at all, in fact I think it made it worse after I tried sanding it down and ended up scratching the finish. I might just end up throwing the cup away and keeping the saucer.

With the arrival of Spring and my increased energy, I’ve decided to pick up a new somewhat passive hobby growing my own herb garden. I decided to try out the Aero Garden, as I don’t have a yard with soil for planting, nor do I have the sunlight for growing potted plants as I live in an apartment that points north and has no direct light all year round. It’s been 7 days since I received it, set it up, planted my seeds, and already most of them are sprouting! The garden came with the 7 gourmet herbs seed kit, which includes Chives, Cilantro, Mint, Thai Basil, Genovese Basil, Curly Parsley, and Dill. I even decided to make use of the light that shines out to the side by making little mini pots with green onion root ends that I chopped off some organic onions while I made dinner. They’re growing so fast!

Day 1: Just set up!
Day 5: Thai Basil, Genovese Basil, and Chives are sprouting. Cilantro is forming a taproot. Curly Parsley, Dill, and Mint are still mia.
Day 6: Within 12 hours, suddenly I have Dill sprouts!!
Day 7: The Dill is so big I had to take the sprouting dome off, chives have more sprouts, both basils are growing, the mint finally has a tiny sprout, the cilantro has a taproot forming, and I think I see a minuscule sprout forming deep in the parsley bed.
Organic green onions growing in tiny makeshift Solo cup pots in the light of the Aero Garden after just 5 days. Haven’t the heart to trim them yet, I’ll wait another week!

Not too much coming up, as I’m on a shopping ban until I get the last of my student loans taken care of. So to help speed it along, I’m having a closet clear out, posting things on ebay that I no longer wear, and letting go of some of the things I was holding onto from my childhood and early 20s that are really just a nostalgic waste of space. I’ve been reading a lot of blogs on minimalism, organization, and letting go of the 80/20 stuff to help put me in the clear-out mood. I made a link to my Ebay sales in the menu of my blog, if anyone is interested in checking out what I have for sale.
